Why Is Containment of Flooded Spaces Vital After Chicago Storms?

1/26/2021 (Permalink)

storm damaged home SERVPRO has the trained technicians for any size disaster done to your home. With the experience and latest technology at their finger tips.

SERVPRO uses flooding mitigation strategies for Chicago homes

The slushy snow and sleet mixtures typical of a late winter storm in Chicago demand flooding mitigation. As the melting mix seeps into your foundation or enters through exterior wind damage, fast action to halt creeping moisture is crucial. Containing the spread of contaminated water is particularly important to save furnishings and carpets that are difficult to disinfect.

What Are Methods SERVPRO Uses to Stop Flood Water Migration?

Mitigating the harm done by dirty water depends on proven strategies to stop the flooding into permeable building materials and fixtures. Expect the following responses by the SERVPRO crew:

  • Elevation of furnishings and household goods above the flood line
  • Pack-out of contents to
  • Move unaffected articles to a secure and dry space
  • Evaluate wet items for rapid restorative services
  • Clear the flooded spaces for unimpeded water extraction and cleaning
  • Use of squeegees and wanded extractors to move and suction water away from dry areas and fixtures
  • Containment of affected areas with 1.6 mil polyethylene barriers and floor level baffles or sandbags to keep unsanitary water manageable and safely removable

Call (312) 509-5000 to schedule a flood mitigation assessment from SERVPRO of Hyde Park / E. Bridgeport / Bronzeville. Our prompt response ensures effective interventions begin before irreparable damage occurs.

Who Can Homeowners Trust for Chicago Fire Cleanup?

fire damaged home Fire and soot damage should be left to the professionals. Call SERVPRO with their IICRTC certified technicians for the job.

Chicago fire mitigation and remediation is a SERVPRO focus.

Most people recognize references to the Great Chicago Fire of 1871. Many would be surprised to learn that other fires also had significant impacts on the Windy City area over the past 150 to 200 years. A noteworthy fire even took place at the site of the city's predecessor, Fort Dearborn, during the War of 1812.

What Happened During the Great Chicago Fire?

Tradition blames a clumsy cow, which has since been exonerated, but the fire of 1871 did ignite on October 8 in a barn on Chicago's southwest side. The wooden structures making up the residential and commercial housing stock of the period burned swiftly. Flames also spread because of:

  • Recent drought conditions
  • Fierce fanning by southwest winds
  • Tired firefighters due to a significant blaze fought the previous day

The fire burned from Sunday night until Tuesday, causing roughly 300 deaths and razing 18,000 properties in the vicinity of the central business district.

How Did the People and Businesses of Chicago Respond After the Fire?

As happened many times over the decades, Chicago rebuilt. Changes in technologies support the construction of properties better able to withstand the heat, flames, and smoke. Unfortunately, advances in fire-proofing buildings proved not foolproof. On December 30, 1903, the Iroquois Theatre burned, killing more than 600 people during a well-attended performance of "Mr. Blue Beard." The fire started when a lighting fixture shorted, setting fire to a curtain. Tragically the configuration caused the most deaths ever of both a theater and any single building in United States history. Risks to theatergoers heightened for many reasons, including:

  • Building plans provided only one entrance and inadequate exits for the three viewing levels within
  • Failure to build an intake, or stage draft shaft
  • Exposed flammable reinforcement of the proscenium arch
  • Excessive use of wood trim on everything
  • Complete lack of proactive protections, of note:
  • Lack of sprinklers
  • Zero alarms or telephones
  • No water connections

Are Any Other Chicago Fires in the History Books?

A heartbreaking incident occurred on December 1, 1958, in Chicago's Humboldt Park neighborhood. Before the end of the school day, a blaze trapped staff and students on Our Lady of the Angels School's stairway. Although the fire department responded swiftly, 92 children and three nuns lost their lives in the crisis. Others were injured as they jumped from windows to avoid the fire and smoke.

Water Restoration Companies Like SERVPRO Speed the Extraction and Drying Steps to Restore Your Chicago Home to Pre-Loss Condition

The city of Chicago has over 2.7 million residents, making it the third-most populous city within the United States. Additionally, it is the most populous city within the state of Illinois and the entire Midwest, resting on 234 square miles of land. Chicago is the county seat within Cook County, and the metropolitan area is often referred to by the name Chicagoland. Other notable nicknames include the Second City, the City That Works, the White City, the City of Big Shoulders, and The Windy City.

Taking a look at geography, Chicago is situated in northern Illinois at the southwestern end of Lake Michigan. It is also located on the Chicago Portage site and along the continental divide at the Saint Lawrence Seaway. The Portage has been a well-known trade route that helps connect the Great Lakes watersheds and the Mississippi River.

Not Only is Chicago a Sports Hub, but it is Also Rich with History

1837 is when Chicago, IL, was incorporated as a city; it increased from there throughout the mid-nineteenth century. Many streets throughout the city were raised by five to eight feet within the 1850s to help with installing the sewer system. Because many of the buildings, sidewalks, and streets here were made with wood, many of them burned entirely during the Great Chicago Fire of 1971.

After the fire, Chicago rebuilt fast, and much of the leftover debris was disposed of in Lake Michigan as landfill material. In 1893, Chicago celebrated a remarkable comeback with the World's Columbian Exposition. One of the buildings of the exposition then became the Museum of Science and Industry.

Over time, Chicago enjoyed several historical firsts, including the construction of the first skyscraper in the nation. This was the steel-framed, 10-story Home Insurance building that was built in 1884 at Adams and LaSalle Streets. It was later demolished in 1931. Chicago is also the start of the famous "Route 66" – beginning on Adams Street at Grant Park right in front of the building known as the Art Institute of Chicago.

Along with those mentioned above first, Chicago is also the birthplace of:

  • Montgomery Ward and Sears, popular mail-order retailers
  • Swift, a refrigerated rail car
  • Motorola, car radio
  • Zenith, the television remote control
  • Willis Tower, formerly Sears Tower, is a 1,451-foot construction that remained to be the tallest building around the globe until 1998
  • The start of the Atomic Age with the first nuclear chain reaction that was self-sustaining, taking place in 1942 at the University of Chicago

Chicago’s Many Museums Draw Visitors from Across the Nation

11/22/2020 (Permalink)

Ariel shot of the Field Museum Chicago has many attractions for all to enjoy!

Educators Are Not the Only People Who Enjoy the Exhibits and Galleries in Chicago’s Museums

The current pandemic has caused the closure of many different businesses, as well as the cancellation of many events in not only Chicago but also all over the U.S. We want to assure you that several museums reopened, with additional ones opening soon.

However, health measures require reduced-capacity to help us maintain social distancing. Calling ahead and confirming the entry information, such as reserving a time slot, mask-wearing, or early closure, minimizes any problems that might otherwise affect your visit.

An unexpected benefit of the pandemic is free or significantly reduced admission for those with active EBT cards. An organization, Museums4All, has a list of over 500 museums admitting up to four people on one card at a time. Not all of the museums listed below are on this list, so please call about admission requirements. (A bonus is that both the Lincoln Park Zoo and the Shedd Aquarium are also on the list!)

Piquing Your Interest and Curiosity

Your interests, hobbies, or career can make some museums more attractive than other ones to you. You might want to visit one to open up a new world to your children or to see what your field discovered and built upon to grow into the industry as it is today. The areas covered by Chicago’s museums are far-ranging, including:

  • Chicago’s topography, native citizens, and contributions,
  • Natural history, archeology, anthropology,
  • Medicine and healthcare,
  • Politics and government, and
  • Technology, science, engineering.

Visiting the McCormick Bridgehouse & Chicago River Museum gives patrons an inside look at Chicago’s unusual bridges. Our rivers, the Skokie, Chicago, and the Grand Calumet, in addition to several creeks, helped Chicago grow. This interesting topic is expanded beautifully for patrons.

At the Bridgehouse, patrons can see how the gears work to move the bridges and get a panoramic view of the city. Call (312) 977-0227 for hours, tour information, and answers to your questions.

The Field Museum is open to patrons and also participates in reduced admission through the Museums4All program. Covering an enormous number of topics, this museum has something for everyone. From ecology to architecture and dinosaur bones to ancient civilizations, the Field Museum satisfies the curious.

Call (312) 922-9410 for information on entrance requirements, galleries, and scheduled activities and events.

The International Museum of Surgical Science shows the twisted, bumpy trail of healthcare from ancient times to today. Even though the purpose has always been to alleviate pain and cure disease, finding the best approach to helping patients has not always been fruitful and without accidents.

A quick call to (312) 642-6502 can tell you if any of the next few Tuesdays are free admission, if reservations are currently required, and other details that make a tour of the museum much more worthwhile. As a Museums4All member, presenting an EBT card results in free admission for up to four people.

The Illinois Holocaust Museum & Education Center features an exhibit on Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, including robes and jabots for patrons to wear. Many aspects of her life outside of the Court are also shown, making others, especially young women, see her achievements as something they can also accomplish.

Notorious RBG’s exhibit, like many other exhibits, is only open during specific hours. You can reach the museum regarding hours, entrance fees, and additional pertinent information by calling (847) 967-4800.

Visitors to the Museum of Science and Industry have an enormous number of exhibits to choose from, despite several remaining shut down to help us fight the pandemic. A hands-on approach plays a role in many areas of the museum and ranges from basics like chicks to the intensely complex robotics that plays a role in shaping our future.

Another Museums4All museum, visitors presenting either an EBT card or a WIC card, plus photo ID, can enter free of charge, for two adults and six children. Call (773) 684-1414 for current information, including upcoming exhibits and requirements for entry.

Unexpected Dangers Inside Chicago’s Fire-Damaged Buildings Pose Increased Risks to Human Safety

Although many of the materials used in buildings were chosen to ensure safety, science discovered that some materials create health hazards. Asbestos, a fibrous mineral, comes to mind. While a completely natural material, it can cause serious health effects in those living or working in homes or buildings containing it.

This insulating material can become exposed during a fire by charring and breaking wood or walls, ceilings, and floors. Special handling must occur during the removal of asbestos without extenuating circumstances that we see in fire damage mitigation and restoration. Things become much more complicated with asbestos. SERVPRO deals with asbestos and other hazardous materials, including lead paint, according to federal and local regulations.

Fire restoration involves the removal of other toxic substances produced during the fire. Smoke, soot, and ash distribute odor throughout an entire building because of its presence in ventilation systems. Our HVAC technicians clean and seal ducts and vents to protect occupants from the damaging particles.

SERVPRO of Hyde Park / E. Bridgeport / Bronzeville is always ready to help other businesses after a fire. Reopening requires the establishment of safe conditions, including an absence of odors. Our technicians are highly trained and always ready to minimize your downtime as much as possible. Call us at (312) 509-5000 to get started on fire damage restoration and mitigation

water pooling on living room floor; furniture in background We are always on call to tackle the water damage in your home.

SERVPRO is a Water Damage Specialist that Can Help to Return your Property to a Pre-incident Condition.

Why do homeowners use professional services after water intrusion?

Water intrusion into your Chicago residence can cause extensive and lasting damage. Professional services can help to safeguard your content by using advanced cleaning equipment in combination with industry knowledge. What Are truck-mounts, and how do they help with water restoration?

When a home suffers extensive water damage in Chicago, a truck-mount can help provide technicians with options for the restoration process. A truck-mount is one of the most versatile pieces of equipment in the restoration industry. SERVPRO uses truck-mounts for various tasks, including microbial growth control, water extraction, deodorization, and pressure washing. Central to the functionality of a truck-mount is the engine. A self-generating piece of equipment is valuable for water restoration because there may be a safety requirement to temporarily shut-off mainline electrics in the home. We can attach hoses of up to twenty-five feet to an extractor, which allows us to use these for most ground floors and some upper levels of your home. Truck-mounts also make sure that tasks can be completed with maximum efficiency and reduce interruption to a homeowner.

What makes truck-mounts so crucial for water restoration?

  • A vacuum component that can extract water, soils, as well as chemical cleaning solutions and solvents
  • Pumping systems that can disperse cleaning chemicals into an extraction wand using a meter to assure correct dilution
  • Water pumping modes which can help to clean the exterior walls of a property or pressure wash areas
  • A heating component that can be incredibly valuable for returning textiles to a preloss condition

Can water extraction clean materials?

Sometimes a water intrusion event can introduce contamination or soils to the home environment. A typical example could be a sewer backup that migrates water from the bathroom into hallways, an intrusion event that degrades over time, or heavy foot-traffic over a wet area, which can apply compressed mud and dirt to a fabric. Hot water extraction can help to restore a material with light to moderate soiling. This process involves spraying the affected area with a cleaning solution using the truck-mounted pumping system, then extracting both the soils and the solution using the vacuum component. By including these methods within one system, our technicians can increase their work efficiency, reducing time-consuming trips for equipment when focusing on a specific area of your home. Hot water extraction can help to save carpets or other textiles that may otherwise need replacing.

How are surfaces prepared for hot water extraction?

Using a pilating rake both before and during the cleaning process to consistently agitate the affected surface and dislodge soils

  • Vacuuming the area to move any disconnected soils from the pilating process
  • Pre-spotting areas of heavier staining using an
  • UltraLite sprayer or a pumping system
  • Scrub the carpets 6" from the baseboard using a coarse brush to loosen soils further.

When does water intrusion ruin textiles?

With light to moderate soiling, carpets are generally restorable to a good condition, providing that you use qualified technicians with the appropriate equipment. In circumstanes where there is a high water contamination presence, such as raw sewage, it is vital to replace the carpet, carpet pad and disinfect the subfloor to return the home to a sanitary state. Long-term water exposure can also lead to ruined carpets, which is why SERVPRO recommends that you contact us as quickly as possible after an intrusion event. Microbial organisms can increase rapidly, causing permanent harm to certain textiles and fabrics. Safeguard against secondary damages in your home by using a local water restoration service in Chicago

How are floors returned to a preloss condition after water intrusion?

  • Pilate the carpet in one direction to restore the dry fibers and allow air-flow on the surface
  • Apply any topical treatments such as an emulsifying powder, wood creme, or deluxe conditioner
  • Use traffic paper in areas where high foot traffic is likely to prevent floors from sustaining further soiling.
  • Industrial cleaning equipment can help speed up restoration, reduce losses, and secure your home after water intrusion. Contact SERVPRO of Hyde Park / E. Bridgeport / Bronzeville at (312) 509-5000.
